LION bioscience and Electric Genetics to develop clustering and analysis tool for gene identification

Heidelberg 12 September 2000LION bioscience and Electric Genetics have formed a collaboration to develop a powerful and user-friendly tool for Expressed Sequence Tags (EST) clustering and expression variation analysis. Such a tool is essential for the identification, characterisation and understanding of genes and their tissue specific regulation. In this joint development project, Electric genetics' robust and widely used stackPACK clustering and analysis tool will be incorporated into LION Bioscience's powerful SRS data integration platform. This combination will reduce time-to-delivery for disease gene candidates in an unparalleled way.

"We are happy to co-operate with LION, one of the leading providers for integrated IT-solutions for the Life Science industry, to further advance EST clustering and variation analysis", stated Tania Hide, Managing Director of Electric genetics. "Once clustered, researchers need to understand the nature of variation in those clusters. Through the direct access to biological background information provided by SRS, the biology behind the variation can be understood far more easily."

StackPACK enables the rapid, accurate clustering, alignment and analysis of high volumes of ESTs and partial length sequences into maximal length transcripts. The only peer-reviewed system of its kind, stackPACK's unique data management and visualisation tools highlight transcript variation and accelerate gene discovery, gene function analysis, expression analysis and drug development for pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry users.

"The combination of SRS with the leading EST clustering tool from Electric Genetics will add an important analysis tool to our integrated i-biology solutions for the Life Science industry", stated Dr. Clemens Suter-Crazzolara, product manager for EST clustering. "We have seen a strong demand for robust and powerful EST clustering software in the market. For this reason we have decided to incorporate the well-established stackPACK tools from Electric genetics into our software solutions. This will allow us to provide higher performance, reliability and functionality to our customers."

SRS is LION's well-established Data Integration System. SRS supports more than four hundred public and private databases and applications, and is widely used throughout the life science industry, including a majority of the top pharmaceutical companies and dozens of academic institutions. The SRS technology is characterised by its ease-of-use, speed, reliability, as well as its flexibility.

Electric Genetics, the only African genome informatics company, develops and markets robust software products and services that enable researchers to better understand genomic information. Devoted to empowering life scientists across a wide range of disciplines through its innovative tools, Electric Genetics provides all its products free-of-charge to academic scientists.
