Apollo Telemedicine and Marconi collaborate in delivering tele-pathology services to physicians worldwide

Falls Church 30 January 2001Apollo Telemedicine Inc., a provider of tele-pathology systems which is located in the United States, has closed a strategic marketing alliance with advanced communications supplier Marconi plc to jointly market Apollo's eHealthstat tele-diagnostic network and telemedicine systems offerings with Marconi's telecommunications technology and Internet network management services.

Mark J. Newburger, Apollo's Chief Executive Officer, commented: "By leveraging Marconi's global communications expertise with Apollo's tele-diagnostic leadership, we can offer clients around the world valuable health care services. With Marconi's global support and hosting services, we expand the audience for our remote tele-diagnostic solution in a dramatic way."

Together, the companies plan to market a high-speed connectivity solution for domestic and international health care organisations to support video-conferencing and high-resolution image transfer applications for medical diagnosis and consultation. The network-based solution will be able to support several simultaneous video-conferencing sessions, voice and data convergence, as well as instant high-resolution digital microscope image transfers between multiple remote sites.

The high-speed network solution is particularly attractive to remote diagnosis situations where a second opinion consultation is required. The credibility of the remote diagnosis is greatly affected by the clarity of images and reliability of the information exchange among the physicians involved through live discussions and network-based correspondence.

In May 2000, Apollo launched eHealthStat, its patented tele-diagnostic network which has been clinically proven in over 3000 cases. Accessing the network through low monthly subscription fees, pathologists, physicians, and health care providers can make diagnoses in real time, greatly cutting the cost and time to begin patient care.

"We are excited about the possibilities of Apollo's eHealthstat network, and are happy to engage in this marketing relationship with them to the benefit of health care customers around the world", stated Joseph A. Nicholas, director of Strategic Industry Solutions for Health care at Marconi. Apollo Telemedicine's Medical Director, Ronald S. Weinstein, M.D., stated: "This partnership harnesses the power of the Web to bring innovative tele-diagnostic capabilities to the health care marketplace."

Marconi plc is a global communications and IT company with around 49.000 employees worldwide and sales in over 100 countries. It supplies advanced communications solutions and the key technologies and services for the Internet. The Marconi Communications headquarters is based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Apollo Telemedicine Inc., is a privately held corporation headquartered in Tysons Corner, Virginia, which develops, assembles and markets patented tele-pathology and telemedicine systems. In 1993, United States patent nr. 5,216,596 was issued to Corabi International Telemetrics Inc., for the tele-pathology technology used by Apollo. This system and method patent covers any system using a remote-controlled robotic microscope to make pathology diagnoses and is exclusively licensed to Apollo Telemedicine.
