Vipersat Networks' satellite technology will link 200 Chinese hospitals in Shangai Telemedicinet

Fullerton 04 September 2001Vipersat Networks, a provider of Internet Protocol-based two-way over satellite multi-media networks and a division of NeTrue Communications Inc., has signed a contract with Shanghai Telemedicinet for the sale and installation of a satellite telemedicine network. The US$ .5 million contract will serve for the implementation of the initial phase of a multi-million dollar network.

Shanghai Telemedicinet and NeTrue's Vipersat also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) stating that Vipersat will be the hardware and software provider for the entire network, which is valued at more than US$ 3.2 million. The network will ultimately link 200 hospitals throughout China with complete installation expected within 18 months. The first phase of the project, which will connect 20 sites with a hub in Shanghai, is intended to be shipped in September 2001 and is expected to be in operation by the end of October 2001.

Shanghai Telemedicinet has agreed to utilise the multi-media and bandwidth management capabilities of NeTrue's Vipersat IP VSAT network to carry video and data traffic. The goal of the telemedicine network is to bring the expertise that is resident in China's major medical centres, to remote medical facilities throughout the country by enabling distant review of patient records, x-rays, and charts, and by facilitating direct tele-video consultation and diagnosis.

"This is a great win for the Vipersat team", said Eric Gurr, President and CEO of NeTrue Communications. "The multi-media capabilities of NeTrue's Vipersat technology are ideally suited to the different needs of a telemedicine network." The Vipersat network will utilise both star and mesh topologies to allow remote to remote communications, ensuring a high level of quality for video transmissions. In addition, Vipersat provides industry-leading technology to guarantee video quality through dynamic bandwidth management and switching. Guarantees of video quality for tele-consultation and diagnosis are essential to the operation of a telemedicine network.

"After the evaluation of a number of satellite systems, we have selected NeTrue's Vipersat Network because of its demonstrated flexibility and superior performance", stated Mr. Liu, Director of Shanghai Telemedicinet. "Our telemedicine application requires a solution which enables a high degree of interaction between dispersed staff to achieve quality care for our patients. In Vipersat we have found the ideal solution."

"We are pleased to be teaming with Shanghai Telemedicinet in supporting their objective of providing high quality health care", added Roger W. Kent, Senior Vice President NeTrue Communications and General Manager Vipersat Networks. "The multi-media and bandwidth utilisation capabilities of our system are ideally suited to Shanghai Telemedicinet's requirements for a video and data network with high quality transmissions and bandwidth on demand."
