Seventh International Conference on Telemedicine

September 22-25, 2002 - Regensburg, Germany

All aspects of e-health will be addressed at this conference: the medical, technical, economical, ethical, and others. Besides the classic fields of telemedicine like tele-consultation, tele-diagnostics in radiology, dermatology, pathology etc., and surrounding legal, reimbursement, and organisational conditions, most advanced areas like tele-surgery and robotics, or space medicine will be presented, as well as most widespread technologies for telenursing and home care and as a support for developing regions.

The scientific programme will include plenary sessions, state-of-the-art lectures, symposia, and workshops. Best-practice demonstrations, instructional hands-on courses, and tutorials will be complemented by poster and commercial exhibitions.

Virtual Medical Worlds is a monthly Virtual Magazine on Telemedicine and High Performance Computing and Networking for readers interested in computer applications in medical environments. Inc., a publisher of interactive health content, has signed a content license agreement with Greenway Medical Technologies Inc., a provider of integrated software solutions for physicians' practices, to produce the industry's first image-based electronic medical record (EMR). Under the agreement, A.D.A.M. will license more than 400 images to Greenway's PrimeSuite EMR application, allowing a visual documentation of a clinical encounter as well as a descriptive or traditional documentation. This agreement, marking the first time a medical image is used in an EMR, represents a new trend in the delivery of vital patient information.
Wellinx enhances wireless options for real time patient data access and disease management
Full ArticleWellinx, creators of the first system providing diagnosis specific evidence-based medicine (EBM) at the point of care via wireless or desktop computers, has made available a new option that provides access to its clinical management system any time and any place there is an Internet connection. Called Wellinx Everywhere, this new functionality provides mobile access to physicians who license the Wellinx system, offering patient data in real time. Wellinx also launched a new Data Warehouse feature to complement its clinical management system. DrFirst brings to market third generation e-Prescribing service

Allscripts' TouchWorks helps building mobile and modular electronic medical record
Full ArticleMaineGeneral Health has signed a contract to purchase the full suite of TouchWorks clinical applications, developed by Allscripts Healthcare Solutions, a provider of point-of-care decision support solutions for physicians. Under a second agreement, Aurora Health Care, a not-for-profit health care system in Wisconsin, will implement a number of TouchWorks mobile clinical applications as well. Aurora physicians will use TouchWorks e-prescribing software on handheld devices such as the Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC from HP, to bring this technology to their patients at the point of care.

Full ArticleAmerican TeleCare Inc. and Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center organised a Senate field hearing which was held in Pocatello, Idaho on July 2, 2002. U.S. Senator Larry Craig, ranking member of the Senate Committee for the Aging, held the committee hearing on the campus of Idaho State University. The hearing was designed to review the use of technology in Idaho that is being used to improve access to health care, improve the management of patients in the home, and to learn about other benefits related to remote connectivity.
Clinician Support Technology introduces Baby CareLink for electronic neonatal care in Colorado
Full ArticleClinician Support Technology (CST), a pioneer in Internet technologies to improve patient care, was hailed by the governor of Colorado as a lynchpin in a pilot programme by that state to build a better health care system. Vanderbilt University and BellSouth present remote eye screening solution to save diabetic patients from blindness
Full ArticleBellSouth and Vanderbilt University Medical Center have celebrated the grand opening of a centre that provides a cutting-edge health care solution and expert care to people at risk of losing their eyesight due to diabetes-related complications. The comprehensive solution allows doctors in remote clinics, who may not be able to detect early signs of diabetes-induced blindness, to send images of patients' retinas to experts at the Vanderbilt Ophthalmic Imaging Center (VOIC) in Nashville, Tennessee. Highly trained medical personnel at VOIC will examine the images and determine if any abnormalities exist that could result in permanent eye damage.

The HIPAA Repository is used by payers, providers, state agencies, and clearinghouses to house data content which is not accommodated by many back-end systems, but must be attached to the remittance advice that payers send back to providers in order for organisations to comply with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations. The HIPAA Repository stores HIPAA transactions such as claims, eligibility and enrollment data.

Under the LINK Programme in Applied Genomics, Genetix Group plc in New Milton and the Medical Research Council's Human Genome Mapping Project Resource Centre (MRC HGMPRC) in Cambridge have formed a 2,5 million pounds sterling collaboration. The project is being funded by the British Department of Trade and Industry, the Medical Research Council, and Genetix.

Full ArticleDevelopments in telecommunication, information technology and computers are the main technical tools for Telemedicine (Telecare, Telehealth, e-health) now being introduced in health care. Telemedicine - medicine at a distance - provides among the many possibilities offered the tools for doctors to more easily consult each other. For individuals, e.g. with chronic diseases, Telemedicine means the possibility to stay in contact with their health care provider for medical advice or even to be alerted if something begins to go wrong with their health. This opens up new possibilities for personalised health and health care. In line with this, ongoing cutting edge research in fields such as textiles, biomedical sensors and mobile communication could pave the way to a better life for a large number of patients. To bring these disciplines together and try to reach a critical mass for Research and Development (R&D), the first workshop on Intelligent Biomedical Clothing (IBC) was organised in Brussels by the European Commission (EC), Information Society Technologies Programme (IST), on 26 April 2002. Another aim of the workshop was to facilitate synergies for possible collaboration in the next European Union R&D Framework Programme (2003-2006).
MelTec wins 2,3 million euro grant to establish collaborative proteomics research network

Nortel Networks provides Toronto hospitals with Enterprise voice over IP solutions

ProHealth Care selects IDX Carecast for computerised physician order entry and IDXrad for radiology

North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System to implement broadband multi-service network

Siemens launches syngo medical imaging platform for virtual simulation in oncology
Full ArticleThe Siemens Medical Solutions Oncology Care Systems Group introduced syngo for oncology applications at the 44th Annual Meeting of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM). This annual educational meeting was held July 14-18 at the Palais des Congrès de Montréal. Siemens demonstrated syngo, the company's patented, universal software platform for medical imaging, used in virtual simulation, an integral oncology application. In keeping with its commitment to an open architecture philosophy, Siemens also showed a syngo connection with the treatment planning systems of various vendors attending AAPM.
Study shows VR training bound to strongly improve OR performance in minimal invasive surgery
Full ArticleThe landmark study "Virtual Reality Training Improves Operating Room Performance: Results of a Randomized, Double-Blinded Study", by world experts from Yale University and Queen's University Belfast was recently presented. It shows that surgeons who train on the surgical Procedicus MIST simulator perform 29 percent faster, made six times fewer errors and were five times less likely to injure non-target tissue, gallbladder or liver when performing surgical removal of a gallbladder, called laparoscopic cholecystectomy, in human patients.
Simulaids to develop new PDA-driven STAT Simulator for life-saving scenarios

New market of extracranial radiosurgery applications reported at Japanese CyberKnife Users' Meeting
Full ArticleJapanese physicians recently convened for the second annual Japanese CyberKnife Users' Meeting in Ube, Japan, to share their clinical experience with the CyberKnife Stereotactic Radiosurgery System. One of the highlights at this year's meeting was the increase in interest and experience using the CyberKnife to non-invasively ablate tumours and lesions located outside of the head, in areas such as the spine. This represents a significant achievement because conventional systems limit the use of radiosurgery to the brain.
