Vince Rosati, Director of Biomedical Engineering at Englewood, noted that the Cath Lab had been considering conversion to a digital image management solution for over two years. When a decision was made to add two more Cath Labs to the Medical Center, the conversion was finally implemented.
A key consideration for physicians was selecting a user-friendly interface that would facilitate communication among internists and surgeons. When, for example, Richard Goldweit, MD, Director of Interventional Cardiology and Co-Director of the Heart and Vascular Institute of New Jersey, is performing a diagnostic procedure in the Cath Lab, he is now able to consult with M. Arisan Ergin, MD, Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery, and simultaneously view angiographic images of the patient in real time, whether Dr. Ergin is in the operating room or his office.
Other important consideration in the selection process was the ability to show high quality compressed video on the Medical Center's intranet as well as off-site for fast communications with referring physicians and department members at their office or home. This feature allows the interventionalist to consult with his associate cardiologists who may have done the initial evaluation on the patient.
"We were particularly impressed with Medcon's product offering and the company's interest in working with our institution to address our specific needs", stated Dr. Goldweit.
