Military Health System uses Informatica's analytics software to remotely share and manage critical data

Redwood City 21 May 2002The Executive Information and Decision Support (EI/DS) Programme Office of the Military Health System (MHS), has selected Informatica PowerCenter, Informatica PowerChannel and Informatica PowerMart data integration software products for extracting and integrating critical data for analysis to help empower the effective management of military health care operations. The EI/DS Programme Office provides decision support information and tools used by MHS managers, clinicians, and analysts to manage the business of health care within the MHS, which serves a worldwide population of 8,4 million active-duty and retired members of the uniformed services, their families and survivors.

The EI/DS Programme Office provides the centralised data store for the MHS with active interfaces to more than 260 systems around the globe. The decision support architecture is currently comprised of a data warehouse and seven operational data marts which support nearly 2000 users and provides a robust database and suite of decision support tools.

The EI/DS Programme Office receives in excess of 30.000 data feeds per month. These feeds are in the form of flat files and contain operational data generated by MHS clinical and business systems. Informatica data integration products are the primary technologies employed to perform data-quality edits, data-element derivation, and maintenance of the ingest metadata.

"Informatica's data integration software helps ensure that the highest quality information is available for MHS users at both the operational and senior management levels", stated Girish Pancha, senior vice president and general manager, Informatica platform technologies. "The ability to deliver insight from a variety of information sources is critical. Informatica is pleased to support the EI/DS Programme Office in its effort to turn tactical data into strategic knowledge for the MHS, one of the United States' largest health plans with a truly global reach."

The EI/DS Programme Office has deployed Informatica PowerCenter, running on an IBM SP2, AIX server, to address Operational Data Store (ODS) refresh and loading requirements for the MHS Data Repository (MDR). The MHS MDR is the EI/DS Programme Office's centralised data repository. Types of data captured in the MHS MDR include beneficiary demographics, network and out-of-network clinical encounters, and expense reporting system information.

Informatica PowerMart performs data mart-specific processing for the EI/DS Programme Office's Population Health Operational Tracking and Optimization (PHOTO) system. The PHOTO data mart provides a concise set of health plan performance measures for MHS managers. MHS personnel at all levels of the enterprise access standardised measures to assess the performance, outcomes, satisfaction, and cost effectiveness of the MHS health care system. PHOTO measures business, clinical, customer satisfaction, population, and resource data from all military facilities and MHS network providers around the world.

In addition, the EI/DS Programme Office uses Informatica PowerChannel to provide a high-performance, secure method for the organisation to integrate global data from remote locations as well as share confidential medical data with users across the extended enterprise. A recent application of Informatica PowerChannel includes the transmission of data between the MHS and the Veterans Health Administration.

Health care is delivered by 131.000 MHS personnel at 76 military hospitals and 460 clinics worldwide, and through TRICARE network civilian providers and treatment facilities. The uniformed services are the armed services including the Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps in the Department of Defense, plus the Coast Guard in the Department of Transportation; the Public Health Service in the Department of Health and Human Services; and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in the Department of Commerce.

Informatica provides business analytics software that enables decision makers to transform business insight into competitive advantage. Informatica offers the industry's only integrated business analytics suite, including an enterprise data integration platform, cross value chain analytic applications, and real time delivery of analytics via Web, wireless, and voice. More than 1500 customers worldwide rely on Informatica software to integrate, analyse, and deliver critical information to managers, executives, and other decision makers to optimise business performance.
