Through the WELLINX system, Affinity is providing a decision support system for their physicians rooted in evidence-based medicine. This system facilitates the selection of the most appropriate treatment options for each patient based on their diagnosis and other factors. It also provides physicians and patients with the most current clinical information on their diagnosis in an easy-to-use, condensed format, plus links to clinical articles and individual patient information.
WELLINX also offers physicians the option of dispensing generic drugs in their clinics, often resulting in lower pharmaceutical expenses for their patients. "This project is an opportunity to leverage our integrated health network", commented Edward Scanlan, MD, medical director for Affinity's health plan. "By helping our physicians prescribe the most efficacious and cost-effective drug, we provide the best possible care in the clinics while managing pharmacy costs at the health plan."
The electronic prescription part of the WELLINX system enables Affinity to streamline the work flow in the physician's office, and eliminate any risk of error due to hand writing legibility, ultimately allowing the physicians to focus on practising medicine.
"While we had not counted on this system as a tool to increase clinical efficiency, we have been pleasantly surprised", stated Michael Hanson, chief operating officer for the 200-physician Affinity Medical Group. "By entering the prescriptions electronically, it is much easier to process the refill requests. The WELLINX interface to our hospital information system puts in place a key piece of the paperless medical record puzzle."
As Affinity searched for a partner in developing a decision support system for their integrated network of physicians, they sought a solution which offered flexibility and was quick to implement.
"WELLINX offers a unique set of clinical tools from electronic prescribing and evidence-based medicine to patient education, as well as financial applications ranging from charge capture to in-office or mail order dispensing programmes", stated Jim Bryant, Chairman and CEO of WELLINX. "We pride ourselves on providing easy-to-use and easy-to-implement systems that fulfil needs in medical practices not currently being met by traditional electronic medical records or practice management software systems."
Affinity Health System is an integrated regional health network that offers a broad array of health care services to more than a dozen Northeast Wisconsin communities. In addition to offering 17 clinics, three hospitals and a long-term care facility, Affinity also owns and operates Affinity Medical Group, an established network of primary care and speciality physicians, and Network Health Plan, a locally owned managed care insurance plan servicing more than 100.000 members through 1300 local and regional health care providers.
WELLINX offers a suite of software tools which integrate directly into the work flow of practising physicians. By providing both clinical and financial applications, all at the point of care, WELLINX helps physicians assure they are providing the highest quality care to their patients while optimising the performance of their practice.
The WELLINX system helps achieve more informed decision-making on the part of physicians in both outpatient and inpatient settings, and allows patients to be more involved in their care through printable patient education materials. WELLINX also offers in-office and mail order drug distribution programmes which cut the time and costs involved in the prescription process, for physicians, their office staff, and the patients they serve.
