San Diego State University students provided with Healinx on-line health messaging platform

Emeryville 17 July 2002The San Diego State University (SDSU) has licensed the on-line communication platform of Healinx Corporation, a provider of Web-based, doctor-patient communication services. Effective August 1, 2002, SDSU Student Health Services staff can securely communicate with any SDSU student patient or other Student Health Services staff member on-line, enhancing patient care and increasing efficiency.

SDSU Student Health Services (SHS) will employ the full range of features of the Healinx messaging platform which include eScript prescribing, routing and renewal tools, on-line appointment scheduling, lab results, referrals, medically reviewed content, and broadcast tools, to quickly and efficiently address SDSU patients' non-urgent health care needs. For example, SDSU plans to use the on-line broadcast capabilities of the Healinx service to issue health-related newsletters, health alerts, and appointment reminders to SDSU patients.

"With our highly mobile population, it has often been difficult to contact our patients, even those with cell phones, and we are pleased to be able to use a secure messaging system to improve communications. Implementing Healinx will allow our wired patients more convenient access to our providers and appointment services. It will also enable our providers to contact their patients in a simple, easy-to-use manner. We anticipate a high rate of utilisation once our patients realise the potential benefits offered by Healinx."

High levels of computer and Internet usage make college students prime candidates for on-line doctor-patient communication. According to the "2001 Pulsefinder On-Campus Market Study", 92 percent of college students own a computer and 90 percent go on-line at least once a day. On average, college students spend three hours on-line daily; 20 percent spend four or more hours on-line each day.

"Student health organisations represent yet another market ideally suited, yet, until now, virtually untapped, for on-line doctor-patient communication", stated Giovanni Colella, MD, president and chief executive officer of Healinx. "In a campus setting, students are wired and time is at a premium. By supplying a convenient, effective channel of access, Healinx keeps communication flowing between students and their health care providers."

Since January 2002, when Healinx expanded its focus to serve large health care organisations, Healinx has won licensing and subscription contracts with seven major medical groups and health care organisations nationwide, including the multi-hospital MedStar Health system located in the Baltimore/Washington D.C. area; Hill Physicians, the nation's largest IPA headquartered in northern California; and Bristol Park Medical Group of Orange Country, California.

Under the agreement, Healinx will deliver a co-branded version of its secure messaging platform for SDSU. To encourage usage, SDSU Student Health Services will actively promote the on-line service to the student population. San Diego State University is the oldest and largest higher education institution in the San Diego region. Founded in 1897, SDSU has grown to offer bachelor's degrees in 78 areas, master's degrees in 61 areas and doctorates in 13. SDSU's more than 33.000 students participate in academic curricula distinguished by direct contact with faculty and an increasing international emphasis that prepares them for a global future.
