Brio software streamlines research data reporting for Cincinnati Children's Hospital

Santa Clara 03 December 2002Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center has selected Brio Intelligence, a key component of the Brio Performance Suite, as its standard query and reporting solution alongside its Oracle research data repository storing data sourced from more than 20 disparate systems. Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center is a world leader in paediatric research and one of the busiest paediatric facilities in the United States. Researchers there are now relying on Brio and Oracle to help understand how a child's clinical and genomic characteristics influence the outcome of care.

"Implementing Oracle and Brio dramatically improved our ability to gather and disseminate critical research data", stated Dr. John Pestian, associate professor, paediatrics, and director of paediatric informatics at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. "We have moved from a manual, cumbersome process requiring knowledge of many source databases to an easily accessible central data repository. Spending less time accessing data means scientists are freed to spend more time on research."

Cincinnati Children's uses an internally developed system called the Discovery System to retrieve and integrate data from its disparate clinical and genome research databases into a centralised data repository. The Discovery System then converts the data to XML, and uploads it to an Oracle data repository. The nature of the research does not allow for many pre-determined reports; instead there is a great demand for ad hoc queries and reports.

Brio works with the United States' only supercomputer dedicated to this type of paediatric clinical-genomics research by creating a user-friendly tool for conducting these queries and reports. Brio was selected over Business Objects because of its unique ability to be function in a multi-platform environment.

"In managing complex research and data points, it is critical that technology components all work together in a cohesive manner", stated Brian Gentile, executive vice president, Brio Software. "Cincinnati Children's Hospital demonstrates how business intelligence translates into valuable knowledge, not only for businesses, but also for any organisation working with large data sets, including the genome sequence."

Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center is a 373-bed institution dedicated to the pursuit of perfect health care. It is the only paediatric organisation in the United States to receive the prestigious Pursuing Perfection grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The Cincinnati Children's Research Foundation ranks third nationally among all paediatric centres in research grants from the National Institutes of Health. The Cincinnati Children's vision is to be the leader in improving child health, through patient care, research and education.
