"Memorial's need for a wireless LAN could not be more mission-critical. We were running out of places for PCs and had to reduce the $770.000 we spent annually on scanning medical records. The wireless network is the predominant means by which we access medical records. We are not experimenting here; we had to be confident that the solution would meet all our expectations", stated O.J. Wolanyk, CIO of Memorial Health System.
Memorial Medical Center has over 550 physicians on staff and a total of over 2400 employees who are using the system on a regular basis, many of whom constantly move between wireless coverage points. "Our initial concerns primarily revolved around security, but session persistence across subnets was a close second. It also had to support a number of handheld devices and allow us to remotely manage the system. Without adequately solving all these issues, we would consider any system worthless. We evaluated a number of vendors and realised that ReefEdge had the most to offer", continued Mr. Wolanyk.
"Memorial had requirements that are representative of a large number of our customers and we are pleased that ReefEdge Connect could address not only their current wireless LAN needs but also prepare them for the future expansions of their network, all while meeting federal regulations set by HIPAA", stated Ajei Gopal, CEO of ReefEdge.
ReefEdge Connect provides a set of unique products that can be deployed in a hospital or clinic setting, enabling the creation of a unique wireless infrastructure that provides a comprehensive, secure and manageable service for all types of wireless health care applications. It provides for easy scalability, allowing an IT manager to operate a single small site, such as a remote clinic, or manage a global WLAN infrastructure comprising tens of thousands of users within a regional multi-hospital system.
The ReefEdge Connect Server and Edge Controllers work together in pair to ensure high availability even in the event of network connectivity failures. Memorial deployed standby Edge Controllers to monitor the primary ones while both units monitored the network simultaneously for uncompromised redundancy. In the unlikely event of a failure, the standby Edge Controller automatically reroutes wireless traffic through a redundant path to the network in a matter of seconds with virtually no disruption of user sessions.
The wireless system will also facilitate Memorial's corporate needs, from accounting and billing to human resources, while it affords the ability to cost-effectively deploy and incrementally grow additional wireless LAN sites such as remote clinics or satellite hospitals. "We are determined to have an EMR system that saves us money, is as natural to our medical staff as using a pen, and never goes down", stated Mr. Wolanyk. "And ReefEdge is helping us deliver on that promise."
ReefEdge leads the WLAN industry in innovative solutions that enable enterprises to deploy, manage and secure their mission-critical wireless networks.
