Tennessee physician practice selects TouchWorks for 100 physicians

Knoxville 20 May 2003Allscripts Healthcare Solutions, a provider of clinical software and information solutions focused on physicians, has expanded the use of TouchWorks Rx+ within the Summit Medical Group physician practice in Knoxville, Tennessee. After using the e-prescribing software with a subset of physicians, Summit will be rolling out the programme for use by approximately one hundred of their 155 physicians.

"Based on our initial success with TouchWorks, we are excited to expand the use of this technology to more of our physicians", commented Tim Young, Chief Executive Officer of Summit Medical Group. "We are counting on TouchWorks to help our physicians further reduce the risk of medication errors and save time for both our physicians, their staff and the patients."

Summit utilises TouchWorks Rx+ as a medication management and prescription communication tool to provide physicians with drug and allergy interaction checking and plan-specific formularies at the point of care. Using wireless HP iPAQ PDAs, physicians prescribe and route prescriptions directly from the exam room. With TouchWorks Rx+, Summit hopes to increase patient safety and reduce callbacks from pharmacies while streamlining office work flow.

"Our clinical software, like TouchWorks Rx+, enables physicians to focus on providing the best possible care for their patients by offering real-time information and eliminating unnecessary paperwork", noted Glen Tullman, Chief Executive Officer of Allscripts Healthcare Solutions. "Our relationship with IDX enhances this efficiency by enabling TouchWorks to interface with Summit's IDX practice management system."

Summit will integrate TouchWorks with their existing Groupcast Practice Management Solution from IDX. Summit has been an IDX customer since 1995. The integration of TouchWorks and Groupcast will directly link clinical and financial activities and assist in driving operational improvements. Due to a 10-year strategic alliance with IDX, Allscripts Healthcare Solutions provides interfaces between TouchWorks and IDX systems, such as Groupcast, for no additional charge.
