Zix signs three-year contracts with MemorialCare and John C. Lincoln Health Network for secure e-messaging

Dallas 11 September 2003Zix Corporation, a global provider of e-messaging protection and transaction services, has signed a three-year agreement for secure e-messaging with MemorialCare Medical Centers (MHS), a five-hospital system located in Southern California. MHS selected ZixCorp services to keep its patient and financial information confidential, maintain prudent practice standards, and comply with the e-mail privacy and security regulations of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). Zix Corporation has also been selected by John C. Lincoln Health Network for its company-wide e-messaging security. The Phoenix-based organisation has signed a three-year contract for both ZixVPM or Zix Virtual Private Messenger and ZixPort e-mail protection services.

MHS purchased a variety of ZixCorp services to ensure organisation-wide secure e-messaging including 2000 licenses of ZixVPM, a company-wide gateway solution providing policy-driven secure e-mail with a pre-configured HIPAA lexicon. MHS also purchased ZixPort, an integrated secure e-messaging portal that mirrors the look and feel of the organisation's existing Web portal.

To help analyse its e-mail policy requirements, MHS conducted an initial ZixAuditor assessment and will use the unique analysis service again in a post-implementation phase to refine its policies and monitor compliance of ongoing communications. In addition, licenses of ZixMail, a desktop-level encryption service, will be distributed to key partners and legal teams.

"We are happy to have this relationship with ZixCorp because we will now be in full compliance with HIPAA privacy and security regulations", stated Penny Dobb, executive director of information security for MemorialCare. "ZixCorp's flexible architecture and automated approach, combined with the HealthyEmail programme, allows us to easily deploy and scale with the highest interoperability possible for our doctors, patients, and partners in the Southern California region. ZixCorp provides a more cost-effective solution than any other vendor in the market. Other solutions are more tedious and time consuming to deploy, which prohibits the real-time flexibility and interoperability we desired."

MHS also plans to utilize secure e-messaging programmes available through HealthyEmail, a non-profit organisation created to maximize the potential of e-mail use in the health care industry. The HealthyEmail initiative will provide secure e-mail for physicians communicating regularly with MHS. ZixCorp is providing two-year secure e-mail licenses of ZixMail to every physician in the United States through the HealthyEmail programme.

For the fourth consecutive year, MemorialCare Medical Centers have been named among the nation's Most Wired hospitals, according to the 2003 Most Wired Survey and Benchmarking Study released by Hospitals & Health Networks magazine. "We are glad to share our secure e-messaging solutions with such a technologically advanced hospital system in Southern California", stated Dennis F. Heathcote, vice president of marketing and products for ZixCorp. "Having MemorialCare show us such positive response and support opens many doors for us in that region."

MemorialCare includes Anaheim Memorial Medical Center; Long Beach Memorial Medical Center including Memorial Women's Hospital, Memorial Rehabilitation Hospital, Memorial Heart Institute and Memorial Cancer Institute; Miller Children's Hospital in Long Beach; Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center in Fountain Valley; and Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in Laguna Hills. MemorialCare is the only Southern California health care system to have rehabilitation, women's and children's hospitals located on one campus. It is also the only Southland system to have two facilities rated by the state of California as the safest places for surviving a heart attack.

After an e-mail assessment by ZixCorp's ZixAuditor service, John C. Lincoln chose ZixCorp services to ensure its e-mail security policies are fully observed by its 3000 employees and 1400 physicians and medical staff and to meet the e-mail safeguard requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). ZixVPM will provide the organisation with automatic encryption of incoming and outgoing e-mails based on company security policy. The service also includes an advanced HIPAA lexicon that recognizes content of Protect Health Information (PHI) to ensure compliance and patient confidentiality. ZixPort will brand the network's e-messaging Web portal with the same look and feel as its Web site.

"ZixCorp was able to solve our HIPAA e-mail concerns", stated Rob Israel, CIO for John C. Lincoln Health Network. "Not only was ZixCorp able to evaluate end-user practices, but was able to provide easy-to-use, easy-to-deploy solutions that make our organisation more efficient and better able to offer secure communications to anyone, from anyone. Furthermore, ZixCorp was able to easily integrate into our existing infrastructure with little or no changes to our normal administrative tasks."

"By incorporating ZixCorp services, we will be able to ensure the privacy and security of our patient data as well as provide an easy-to-use method for patients, payers, and providers to communicate with us", continued Rob Israel. "ZixCorp incorporated not only e-mail scanning to let us know what was coming and leaving our organisation, but included the all-important encryption scheme that was missing in other products."

The John C. Lincoln Health Network was established 76 years ago as a tuberculosis health camp. Currently, the network includes two hospitals; an extended care centre; a full range of primary and medical services; numerous charitable and community services; and the John C. Lincoln Health Foundation, a philanthropic and fundraising division that supports charitable programmes. The network is also the only Arizona hospital organisation to receive the Foster G. McGaw Prize, a national award sponsored by the American Hospital Association.

Zix Corporation offers a range of solutions to protect organisations from viruses, spam, and electronic attack, as well as enabling secure electronic communications, such as e-mail encryption and e-prescribing. ZixCorp helps organisations of any size to streamline operations, mitigate risks, and leverage the efficiencies of e-messaging.
