MedCath is a health care provider focused on the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease that owns and operates ten hospitals in eight states together with its physician partners who own an equity interest in hospitals where they practise. A report prepared by The Lewin Group Inc., a nationally recognized consultant to the health and human services industries, found that MedCath's hospitals, on average, treat patients with higher case-mix severity and achieve lower in-hospital mortality rates and shorter average lengths of stay than its peer community hospitals including major teaching facilities.
MedCath has changed strategic direction in information systems and is planning to roll out Affinity to all of its hospitals. Affinity provides a comprehensive, centralized health information management solution, with added applications to enhance work flow, improve central billing office (CBO) functions and provide state-of-the-art Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) capabilities.
The first hospital scheduled to go live with Affinity is MedCath's Heart Hospital of Milwaukee. Code loading, functional testing, and core training have been completed. Advanced patient care applications integrating critical care monitoring equipment with patient vital signs information, including automated vital sign capture and patient charting, will be completed in the fourth quarter of 2003 with live operations scheduled for the first quarter of 2004. The next hospital on the schedule is MedCath's hospital under construction in San Antonio, which will be the first MedCath site to implement Affinity CPOE and is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2004.
"Improving the quality of patient care, technology and strategic partnership were all key factors in our decision to implement QuadraMed's Affinity HIS", stated Richard Shirey, MedCath's Chief Information Officer. "Affinity's overall flexibility, end-to-end functionality and QuadraMed's vision for the future evolution of health information products are aligned well with MedCath's objectives. We believe Affinity's CBO and CPOE capabilities will enable us to further improve operational efficiency and health care quality across all of our facilities by enhancing clinical work flow and addressing the full range of nursing care and patient safety issues."
QuadraMed Affinity helps acute care hospitals increase efficiency and deliver quality health care by ensuring that accurate information can be rapidly transmitted and accessed by all appropriate medical professionals throughout an organisation. From registration through billing, Affinity tracks every step in a patient's course of clinical care with speed and precision. It increases record accuracy by centralizing patient history and streamlining work flow.
Affinity's suite includes Patient Charting, Clinician Access and Electronic Document Management (EDM) capabilities that enhance the delivery of high quality care by heightening productivity and helping to minimize human error through the rapid flow of critical information between health care team members and the systems that support them.
Finally, Affinity's integrated financial information management capabilities provide the accurate processing and reporting of patient revenue and provider financial data that health care organisations need to effectively manage their revenue cycle. This unmatched level of functionality is why Affinity HIS has achieved recognition from Gartner's "Magic Quadrant" and achieved superior ratings from KLAS Enterprises having been repeatedly named the nation's top "Major Acute Care" software.
Frank Pecaitis, Senior Vice President of QuadraMed's Enterprise Division, stated: "We are very excited about our partnership with MedCath and the progress made to date. We look forward to taking health care information system functionality to the next level with them. MedCath's business philosophy parallels our own mission of assisting health care professionals in delivering outstanding care with optimum efficiency. Affinity provides a comprehensive health care information technology solution that enables health care organisations like MedCath to cost-effectively deliver the highest quality care."
