Eclipsys' SunriseXA provides new care delivery model for Surgical Alliance's innovative facilities

Nashville 02 October 2003Surgical Alliance Corporation, a developer and manager of surgical facilities, is deploying Eclipsys' SunriseXA advanced health care information solution in its new orthopaedic surgical hospitals. The only fourth-generation system on the market, Eclipsys' SunriseXA is delivered as a seamless fully integrated Web-based solution built on the Microsoft .NET Framework.

"After reviewing six vendors, we selected Eclipsys as the technology partner best able to support our objectives", stated Edward Bivins, chief technology officer for Surgical Alliance. "Eclipsys' ability to provide a remote processing site capable of supporting all Surgical Alliance facilities combined with its proven, future-state technology made it the best choice for us. Most importantly, Eclipsys is able to provide systems for smaller facilities, at a price point that aligns with our business model. With Eclipsys, Surgical Alliance has a partner with experience we trust and whose vision and long-term strategy align with ours."

Surgical Alliance's strategic vision is to create a more efficient surgical environment, leading to better patient outcomes, higher patient satisfaction, more cost effective care, and greater convenience for physicians, patients and their families. Recognizing that information technology is an essential tool to empowering Surgical Alliance to fulfil its mission, the speciality surgery provider sought to develop an innovative IT model for its facilities.

The Eclipsys IT solution will be implemented first in New Albany Surgical Hospital, with eight operating rooms and 42 in-patient beds, being built from the ground up in New Albany, Ohio, and scheduled to open December 1, 2003. Once SunriseXA is deployed in this facility, the solution will serve as a model for the company's future surgical hospitals.

As IT partner, Eclipsys will provide Surgical Alliance with a complete information infrastructure for capturing clinical process information, managing resources, and controlling costs. On-line and wireless clinical documentation of nursing notes, physician progress notes, and distribution of medications will automate processes creating a paperless environment. Physicians, nurses and other clinicians will have immediate, secure access to medical content and patient medical records to aid them in clinical decision-making, which will improve patient safety and operational efficiency.

SunriseXA work flows to be deployed include the enterprise Computer-based Patient Record (CPR) work flow engine, Surgical Management, Laboratory, Access Management, Revenue Management, Knowledge-Based Diagnostic Imaging and Materials Management. Related components include, but are not limited to: Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE), Knowledge-Based Orders, Medication Management, Case Scheduling, Enterprise Scheduling, Enterprise Person Identifier and Contract Management. The IT solution will be remote-hosted from the Eclipsys Technology Solutions Center in Mountain Lakes, New Jersey.

Headquartered in Tennessee, Surgical Alliance's objective is to become the leading developer and operator of orthopaedic surgical facilities in the markets it enters. At the core of the company's business model is a physician-partner structure that enables physicians to be involved in developing speciality surgical facilities and to participate in strategic and operational decisions. Facilities are designed, equipped, staffed, and operated to deliver co-ordinated patient-focused care while concurrently improving the work environment for all medical personnel.

Eclipsys is a provider of advanced clinical, financial and management information software and service solutions to more than 1500 health care facilities. Eclipsys empowers health care organisations to improve patient safety, revenue cycle management and operational efficiency through innovative information solutions.
