McKesson expands patient strategy deploying interactive Horizon PatientVision solution with LodgeNet

Atlanta 20 July 2004The typical hospital stay will soon feel much more personal for patients and their families with Horizon PatientVision from McKesson, the world's largest health care services and information technology company. It is the company's newest innovation for enhancing the patient experience and equipping patients to be more informed and active in managing their own care. Using a bedside display or television, the new in-room solution will combine secure access to patient information with on-demand entertainment options, Internet access, e-mail and educational services, fostering more interaction between patients, their families and clinicians. Horizon PatientVision is designed to be used by clinicians at the bedside, resulting in greater efficiency and more time spent with patients.

"Delivering an exceptional patient experience is one of our core goals", stated Tim Stettheimer, chief information officer, St. Vincent's Hospital, Birmingham, Alabama. "By using technology to bring education and entertainment options to our patients, we'll be able to continue to improve their satisfaction as well as that of our staff. For example, our nurses are very excited about the process efficiencies Horizon PatientVision will bring to the delivery of patient education."

Horizon PatientVision will enable clinicians to offer more personalized bedside counseling with patients during their treatment by reviewing test results, images and medications. Caregivers will also have convenient access to McKesson's clinical applications while retrieving the most up-to-date patient information. The benefits of a more informative, participatory approach are improved patient safety, more accurate medication administration and clinical documentation, and higher technology adoption rates by clinicians.

In an effort to create the most positive patient experience, McKesson has aligned with LodgeNet, one of the world's largest providers of interactive television systems and broadband services to the lodging industry. Horizon PatientVision will utilize LodgeNet's core interactive television infrastructure to provide hit movies, Nintendo video games, access to information and delivery of certain patient services within the room.

"With providers' increasing focus on creating a positive patient experience, we see a great opportunity to bring our expertise and technology to the health care market", stated Scott C. Petersen, LodgeNet's president and chief executive officer. "We're excited about working with McKesson, which brings strong health care leadership as well as extensive technology expertise and market reach."

Horizon PatientVision is the latest addition to McKesson's solution portfolio designed to enhance the patient experience and empower providers in building stronger relationships with their patients. Earlier this year, the company introduced HorizonWP Patient Portal, which enables patients to communicate on-line with care team members and access their personal information or medical content before, during and after their hospital stay. They can also actively track their progress and manage their disease during the time it is needed most, from the time of diagnosis through their return to wellness. McKesson also recently announced a new telehealth solution, Telehealth Advisor to enable remote disease management and monitoring in the home for patients with chronic health conditions.

"As McKesson continues to digitize health care, it's essential to equip our customers with solutions that not only make health care safer, but also increase patient satisfaction", stated Sunny Sanyal, McKesson's group president for clinical solutions. "By improving the patient experience and enabling patients to become better informed about their care, we're making it easier for our customers to provide safe, high-quality care that leads to better outcomes and ultimately, better health."
