Immersion Medical introduces educational Hysteroscopic Myomectomy CD

San Francisco 10 November 2004Immersion Corporation's wholly owned subsidiary, Immersion Medical Inc., has introduced the first product of its Educational Suite on compact disk: the Hysteroscopic Myomectomy CD. Developed in partnership with leading clinical experts and based on guidelines from regulatory agencies and gynaecological organisations, the CD contains the essential material needed to understand minimally invasive hysteroscopic procedures that provide alternatives to open surgeries such as hysterectomy.

The CD was created for residency fellowship programmes, practising OB/GYN physicians, and medical device manufacturers. Through text, interactive graphics, animation, and video instruction by leading gynaecologists, the material includes the history of hysteroscopy, definitions, indications, contra-indications, complications, anatomy, patient management, electrosurgery and myomectomy procedures, and clinical tips.

Dr. Damian P. Alagia, programme director of Minimally Invasive Gynaecologic Surgery at the Virginia Hospital Center was one of the contributing experts for the CD. "The interactive graphics are among the best I've ever seen", he stated. "OB/GYN residents, and even practising physicians, will find Immersion Medical's Hysteroscopic Myomectomy CD a valuable and enjoyable learning experience."

"In developing this CD, we looked to leaders in the field, including the American College of Gynaecologists and the American Association of Gynaecological Laparoscopists (AAGL). Users can feel confident in relying on it as a resource", stated Richard Vogel, senior vice president and general manager, Immersion Medical. "Our customers can look forward to additional educational materials of this caliber."

For hands-on training, Immersion Medical offers the Hysteroscopy AccuTouch System, a computer-based simulator. The simulator provides an immersive, virtual-reality experience that includes procedure-based content for cognitive and motor skills training. Using patented TouchSense force feedback technology, the system lets physicians experience the appropriate resistance as they navigate through the cervical canal and uterus. Digital simulations of real-life procedures, complications, and tool/tissue interaction let clinicians learn hysteroscopy procedures in a realistic, risk-free environment.

Immersion Medical Inc. designs, manufactures, and markets computer-based medical training simulation systems worldwide. The systems integrate proprietary computer software and tactile feedback robotics to create highly realistic medical procedure simulations that help train clinicians. The company's four key product lines are the CathSim AccuTouch System, the Endoscopy AccuTouch System, the Endovascular AccuTouch System, and the Hysteroscopy AccuTouch System.
