According to Dr. Anthony Mancuso, professor and chairman, Department of Radiology at Shands and UF, radiologists and cardiologists collaborated to develop a fellowship that would meet the most stringent requirements of organized radiology and cardiology. "CT acquires a lot of data and it is important to learn how to interpret that data to provide the best patient care possible. Our institution emphasizes multi-disciplinary educational programmes, so it makes sense for Shands to offer a fellowship focused on this breakthrough technology that crosses speciality lines and is significantly changing the clinical environment."
The programme curriculum was developed based on guidelines from the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Radiology to meet the needs of both specialities. Curriculum content consists of several key elements, including hands-on manipulation and reading of cardiac CT images, daily clinical read out sessions, on-line testing applications and continuing medical education opportunities. The fellowship, which begins in early 2006, accommodates two to four students at a time and lasts from one week to three months, depending on the level of physician training and individual goals.
