Remarkable number of hospitals among new BELNET customers

Brussels 09 May 2006A fair number of Belgian institutions have chosen BELNET as provider for their research, educational and public service activities during the past months. Thus unlimited data can now be exchanged with these new customers free of charge via the BELNET network. During 2006, several new hospitals will be connected to the BELNET network: their dossiers are already in the process of finalisation.

BELNET has noted a tendency toward increased demand from the medical research sector. Collaboration in research has grown significantly between the academic and regional hospitals. The scientific sector also needs sufficient bandwidth in order, for example, to distribute medical images at very high resolutions and to implement telemedicine projects. BELNET, with its high-performance research network, is the pre-eminent provider for many medical institutions.

In addition, from 13 to 18 March, the "International Medical and Health Film Festival" was held in Liège. During this festival, BELNET - in collaboration with the Province of Liège, the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire (CHU) of Liège, the University of Liège (ULG) and the Walloon Region - handled the live streaming of a surgical operation over the Internet. Use was made of multicast and unicast technology. The project was set up by the IT Department of the ULG. BELNET made a 1Gb port available to the research network.

The project was also very interactive, as questions could be asked via a chat module on the Web site. These questions were passed on to the surgeon in the operating room, who was able to answer these in front of the camera.

BELNET provides its users with advanced telematics services that meet their needs in the field of data communication. In addition to carrying out these tasks, BELNET is also charged with the management and housing of the Belgian Internet exchange node BNIX - the Belgian National Internet eXchange - and of FedMAN - Federal Metropolitan Area Network, the network that connects all the federal administrations with one another and with the Internet.
