With health care open enrollment for 2007 beginning last month, the Egenera platform gives Metavante new levels of processing power at the advent of its busiest time of year. Transactions, such as plan/employer set-up, employee enrollment and card transactions, generally spike to 16 times normal levels during this period.
By transforming 80 percent of physical legacy-server components into software, the Egenera system enables datacentre virtualization, wherein processing, networking and storage resources are pooled and allocated to applications based on immediate business requirements. Metavante Healthcare Payment Solutions is using this unique architecture, referred to by Egenera as a Processing Area Network (PAN), to accommodate demand spikes, implement N+1 high availability, improve performance and simplify management.
"Several of the leading vendors had taken their standard box, reduced the form factor and put it in a chassis. But I was looking for a system with unique virtualization capabilities, designed from the ground up to improve upon standard servers", stated Tom Torre, vice president and general manager, Metavante Healthcare Payment Solutions. "To me, virtualization means having a rack of processing power and deciding how I want to use it at any point in time. Because they contain nothing but processors and memory, Egenera blades give us that flexibility."
"We are delighted to welcome Metavante Healthcare Payment Solutions - the market leader in consumer-directed health care - as an Egenera customer", stated Mike Thompson, president and CEO, Egenera. "When a business is growing rapidly, like Metavante Healthcare Payment Solutions, datacentre infrastructure must deliver flexibility, availability and performance while reducing operational costs. It's gratifying to hear that Egenera technology was uniquely capable of meeting these requirements for Metavante."
