Learn about Electronic Health Records with UC Davis Extension

Davis 16 November 2009With the goal of stimulating the widespread adoption of Electronic Health Records (EHR), the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act provides significant support for health IT. Building capacity in health and hospital systems to develop, implement and utilize EHRs is key to making this policy a reality.

Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of EHR systems in University of California (UC) Davis Extension's "Electronic Health Records" course. Taught by Dr. Michael Hogarth, University of California, Davis, faculty and principal investigator for the California Electronic Death Registration System, this course is offered exclusively on-line and starts December 28. Topics include: the components of EHRs, information standards (HL-7), privacy and security standards, information representation (ICD, CPT), terminological systems (SNOMED, LOINC), decision support, and issues concerning adoption and implementation.

Students can then explore the profound impact of the Internet on the delivery of health care in the on-line course, "The Internet and the Future of Patient Care". Taught by Dr. Peter Yellowlees, an internationally recognized expert in telemedicine and education delivery, this course starts December 28 and will examine how health websites, blogs and other popular social media tools are being used in health care. Students will explore the future of health care in an information age where care will become increasingly personalized and distributed, and gain hands-on experience using virtual reality environments. Both courses are available as stand-alone classes or as part of the Health Informatics Certificate Programme.

Specifically designed for busy health professionals, the online UC Davis Extension Health Informatics Certificate Programme explores the emerging health informatics field and how the acquisition, storage, retrieval and use of information can play a critical role in enhancing the quality of care, reducing the costs of delivery and addressing population health issues.
