Streamlining the medical information management process has become a priority issue in today's health care facilities. As the overall health care organization responsible for the inhabitants of Lancaster and Chester Counties in South-central Pennsylvania, Lancaster Health Alliance recently entered into a commercial agreement with American Management Systems. This consultancy company will implement RecordLink, a hospital document management and workflow tool, within the 30 health care related entities of Lancaster Health Alliance in the course of 1999.

The RecordLink system allows the hospital staff to access medical patient records throughout the enterprise wherever needed, without violating the security and privacy of the information. American Management Systems will install the cutting-edge health care document management and workflow application in a phased approach. Starting with Lancaster General Hospital, the three hospitals integrated in the Lancaster Health Alliance will be served first. The other hospitals are the Susquehanna Division and the Brandywine Hospital.

RecordLink is integrated along with the underlying document management hardware and WorkFlo Business software, designed by FileNET Corporation, a major expert in this kind of large-scale programming. The AMS company will equally provide systems integration services. Lancaster Health Alliance has based its choice for RecordLink on the three important criteria of user-friendliness, the advanced document management functionality and the high level of customer satisfaction. As such, AMS constitutes the perfect vendor to fit in with the Alliance's strategy for document imaging.

The Lancaster Health Alliance represents over 30 health care related entities, which offer a full continuum of care within the South-central Pennsylvanian region. The medical specialities include a large number of outpatient service facilities, open-heart surgery, neonatal care and geriatrics. Next to this, the Alliance also integrates a 100+ member primary and speciality care medical practice group. The Lancaster General Hospital forms the major keystone as one of the "Top 100 Benchmark Hospitals" in the United States within the past two years.

Lancaster General functions as a regional referral centre for a wide variety of specialities, including cardiac, pulmonary, trauma and neonatal care as well as neurosurgery. In the state of Pennsylvania, the 493-bed hospital is one of the five most frequented facilities. Each year, Lancaster General counts over 27.000 admissions, 43.000 emergency room visits, and 400.000 outpatient calls, spread over nine floors covering one giant city block. The strategic deal with AMS has to meet the ever increasing needs inside the Lancaster Health Alliance with regard to enterprise-wide and multi-functional solutions.
