Two days filled with presentations, discussions, many questions asked and few answers given, forum talks, announcements made, and piles of information exchanged... All this has left the truly motivated ITIS-ITAB'99 Conference participants with a rich feeling of satisfaction but also with the sound knowledge that there remains still a lot of work that needs to be done. Co-chair, Dr. Swamy Laxminarayan noted that all the issues that have been tackled with relation to Information Technology applications in biomedicine and telemedicine services, are in the process of development. The second co-chair, Dr. Andy Marsh fused the different themes, which emerged during the discussions, into an energetic acrostichon. Privacy, Legal issues, Evaluation, Applications, Standards, Environments, Security, Telecommunications use, Accessibility, Resources, Technology are all items which are being dealt with, so PLEASE START !
This year's ITIS-ITAB Conference welcomed a few very renowned speakers from the United States. Indeed, Dr. Swamy Laxminarayan and Dr. Luis Kun have carried out a lot of good work and did not spare their efforts to promote the use of telemedicine and Information Technology at a global level. As representatives of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS), and supported as well by Dr. Robert Istepanian, the EMBS representative from the United Kingdom, they offered the ITIS-ITAB audience a rich flavour of their tremendous experience and knowledge in the field. A lot of hope and ambition has risen to continue this fruitful collaboration in the next years.
The ITIS-ITAB participants also enjoyed the spontaneous lecture of Dr. Mary Moore on the willingness to adopt medical innovations, and the well framed presentations by Dr. Ewart Carson and Dr. Gudrun Zahlmann on evaluation methodology. Both speakers illustrated their scientific research with a case study. The business aspects of trusted services in Europe were highlighted by Price/Waterhouse/Coopers consultant, Mr. Robbert Fisher who presented the results of the BESTS study. Dr. Lars Edenbrandt focused on the AIDI-Heart project in Lund, while Mr. Yiannis Samiotakis from Atkosoft company introduced the HealthLine network. Drs. Ad Emmen from Genias Benelux announced the emergence of the new Virtual Medical Worlds Community.
Co-chair and promoter of the Euromed project, Dr. Andy Marsh, invited the Euromed partners to the ITIS-ITAB event to present the scientific results of the different telemedical initiatives, which reside under the project's name. The speakers were offered a chance to share their experiences and findings with the international audience, present at the RAI in Amsterdam. At the end of the conference, the aim was confirmed by all the attendees to create a consortium and community for continuous feedback. In the coming months, all the questions and issues raised during the ITIS-ITAB'99 Conference will be further addressed by means of electronic mailings and Internet discussion forums. As such, the ITIS-ITAB partners intend to prepare the way for the next ITAB-ITIS Conference in the year 2000. If you want to kept posted, we invite you to pay regular visits to the ITIS-ITAB'99 Conference site.
