Transformation of Healthcare for Excellence in Srategy, Information and Service: this is the mission of the Esprit supported THESIS project in a nutshell. Unlike the WIDE or the COBRA project, THESIS emphasises the efficiency of the hospital management process rather than the organisation of the clinical workflow in order to gain competitive advantage through the implementation of information services. Thesis Health Check (THC) is a PC-based software tool which allows analysis and improvement of the hospital key indicators to match their strategic targets and to combine them with the stakeholders' objectives. Both the Athens Medical Centre and the UK Teddington Memorial Hospital serve as pilot sites for this Business Process Re-engineering program.
Social and political changes in Europe are forcing the health care sector to transform centralised institutions into leaner and responsive small enterprises. The THESIS project is responding to the need of avoiding unnecessary bureaucratic procedures by optimising the organisational capabilities.
The developed THC tool offers a simplified and user-friendly analysis of the different hospital key indicators fixed by public health authorities, showing a preliminary cause-effect relationship between activities and costs. Is also provides a business justification by measuring the benefits and the payback time for the return on capital invested so as to maximise responsiveness to changing markets.
Although it is difficult at the moment to measure the influence of a single decision on the entire process, the THC tool automatically identifies critical areas. These can be easily 'zoomed into' for further data analysis, process mapping and change, including the ability to use patient-level detail. The THC application presents data in both tabular and graphical form.
THESIS Health Check is aiming at the definition of benchmark values in order to determine 'best practice' approaches for the hospitals enabling them by means of these parameters to monitor their efficiency performance and their progress over time.
Two European health care providers are already benefiting from the system. The THESIS results are estimated to deliver a payback for Teddington Memorial Hospital and for Athens Medical Centre within two years. The final goal is to transfer the THESIS model to other small-to-medium scale enterprises outside the health care business. Please consult the THESIS site for more interesting details.
