Merge Technologies, a specialist in diagnostic medical imaging software and hardware, has developed the first product in a series of DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) Protocol Analyzer tools. The MergeDPM diagnostic software package will substantially facilitate the servicing of DICOM enabled system products. DICOM application users no longer need to return affected equipment to the provider for repair or check-up analysis. Both Philips and GE Medical Systems already have ordered the programme.

Since DICOM became the global data communication standard in medical diagnostic imaging, Merge Technologies has taken up the challenge to design commercial DICOM software toolkits. The programmes are already used by more than 150 product manufacturers as well as DICOM solutions providers. The company equally sells integration products and services to diagnostic-imaging departments in hospitals and clinics and as such, has reached a major position in the setting of industry standards for the digital transfer of diagnostic images, produced by medical imaging devices.

The newly issued diagnostic MergeDPM software has been implemented to run in the Windows 95-98/NT environment. The package allows the field service engineers to easily monitor DICOM communications between several medical imaging devices from behind their laptop computers. In this way, a lot of time can be saved in the very often complicated diagnosis of DICOM communications problems. In addition, the application of Merge products can help existing devices to be retrofitted to the DICOM industry standard output format while manufacturers are able to build new DICOM compatible machines.
